Purcell, Henry

(1659–95)
   Composer.
   Purcell was born in London and he became organist of Westminster Abbey in 1680 and organist of the Chapel Royal in 1682. In the history of Church music, he is remembered for his many anthems which include ‘My heart is inditing’, ‘Rejoice in the Lord alway’ and ‘O praise God in his holiness’. Many of his compositions are still sung today.
